Great Ideas for Elementary School: CLASS MONEY... Create your own class money by having students design the bucks, themselves. Brainstorm a name for your class money. (As an example, our school mascot is a gopher, so my class came up with "Go F'r-Bucks.") Cut ditto paper into 6ths and have a stack available for students to use for designing. Have students hang their finished designs on a bulletin board where you can easily number them. When the deadline for turning in entries is up, have students vote on their favorites. (I give students 3 votes each...to be turned in on a small sheet of paper.) The student with the most votes gets to choose the money denomination for his/her design. In my class we use our Go-F'r-Bucks for all kinds of positive reinforcement, as well as paying for class jobs every Friday. (It's a great way to teach keeping track of money in a bank pass book!) The money can be used to buy something from our prize box and/or saved to purchase a bigger prize, like... planning their day, being teacher of the day, helping another class for the day, helping the school secretary, etc. Later in the year they can also use their class money for book auctions and buying things at our Egyptian Bazaar and Greek Festival. Judy Buzza, from Oakdale School in Oroville, says this is a fun way to teach your children at home or school about your local area. Just pick up some local maps of your town (AAA is a great source). Before you give them to your children, make a list of all the local attractions, land formations, streets, important places that you want your children to be able to locate on their maps. Then compose a scavenger-hunt-type worksheet of places you want your children to find. (Examples: Locate three parks in Oroville, and give the map coordinates. Find the city library, and write down the street that it's on. List two of your favorite fast-food restaurants, and give the map coordinates. Is the Feather River east or west of _____?) Get the idea?! As well as writing the answers, children can highlight the locations with felt tips or crayons. Then for a reward, you can visit some of the places that they found, and maybe round off the trip with a visit to a favorite fast-food restaurant for a meal or snack. What a fun way to learn!
